Specialized Concrete Types & Mix Designs
Concrete Ready-Mix (RMC) is tailored based on the strength, durability, and workability required for a specific structure. The "type" is usually defined by its mix design (Proportional vs. Designed) or its specific application.
| Type | Primary Purpose | Common Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Pervious Concrete | Allows water to pass through | Stormwater management / parking lots |
| Flowable Fill | Self-leveling backfill | Utility trenches and abandoned pipes |
| Lean Concrete | Low cement content | Base layers or leveling under foundations |
| High-Early Strength | Fast setting times | Road repairs or rapid-cycle construction |
Standard Ready-Mix Concrete
This is the most common type, used for general construction where there are no extraordinary environmental or structural constraints.
Applications: Residential slabs, driveways, sidewalks, and small foundations.
Key Feature: Typically categorized by strength (e.g., 2,500 psi to 4,000 psi).
High-Performance Concrete (HPC)
HPC goes beyond standard durability and strength. It is engineered to resist chemical attacks, extreme weather, or high structural loads.
Applications: Bridges, skyscrapers, and marine environments.
Key Feature: Low permeability and high early strength, often exceeding 8,000 psi.
Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC)
SCC is highly flowable and non-segregating. It can spread into place and fill formwork under its own weight without the need for mechanical vibration.
Applications: Heavily reinforced structures or complex architectural shapes where vibration is difficult.
Key Feature: Exceptional fluid-like behavior while maintaining stability.
Fiber-Reinforced Concrete
This mix includes macro or micro-fibers (steel, glass, or synthetic) dispersed throughout the concrete.
Applications: Industrial floors, pavements, and shotcrete.
Key Feature: Reduced plastic shrinkage cracking and improved toughness or impact resistance.
